Vladimir Bobic is a Consultant Orthopaedic Knee Surgeon and the Director and founder of Chester Knee Clinic and Cartilage Repair Centre. The Clinic, founded in 1996, is based at the Grosvenor Hospital in Chester where it is recognised as an ISAKOS-approved teaching centre, and at Spire Cheshire Hospital in Stretton.

Mr Bobić has over sixteen years of extensive experience in all aspects of knee surgery, including arthroscopic surgery, ligament reconstruction, knee arthroplasty, and particularly in articular cartilage repair. Mr Bobić is the founder of the Liverpool Knee Service and a former full-time NHS knee surgeon at The Royal Liverpool and Broadgreen University Hospitals, Broadgreen Hospital, Liverpool (1996 to 2002). He also specializes in complex medico-legal aspects of knee injuries.

Mr Bobić is an internationally recognised expert and one of the UK’s clinical pioneers in knee articular cartilage repair. He is the inventor and instrument designer of Arthrex OATS (Osteochondral Autograft Transfer System) articular cartilage repair technology. He performed the first ACI (Autologous Chondrocyte Implantation) in the North West of England in 1998, and continues to perform a wide range of cartilage repair procedures in Chester, including ACI surgery, on a regular basis. He was granted Liverpool LREC approval for a Randomised comparative evaluation of Genzyme Carticel ACI vs. Microfracture in the treatment of articular cartilage defects of the knee in October 1999, and South Cheshire LREC for multicentre clinical study of The effectiveness of ACI compared with MACI for the treatment of damaged articular cartilage of the knee (MREC approved Stanmore multicentre clinical trial) in May 2003. He was also a member of the MRC funded and MREC approved ACTIVE trial (multicentre trial of autologous chondrocyte implantation) based at The Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital in Oswestry.

Mr Bobić is a dedicated teacher and sought-after lecturer throughout the world. He was one of the UK’s most frequently invited orthopaedic lecturers internationally: since 1996 he has given over 200 lectures on knee surgery at major international and national conferences. He has published numerous articles on knee articular cartilage injury, repair and imaging.

He is involved in international collaborative clinical and basic science research related to knee articular cartilage imaging, repair, rehabilitation and functional outcomes. He has over fifteen years of experience in clinical and arthroscopic imaging, including digital image and video editing, and over twelve years of experience in clinical and MR digital imaging of articular cartilage.

Mr Bobic is a founder and former chairman of the ICRS Articular Cartilage Imaging Committee, and Visiting Associate Professor at the Musculoskeletal Imaging Section, Stanford University School of Medicine, Radiology Department, Stanford, California, USA (1998). He introduced web-based MRI teleradiology at the GrosvenorNuffield Hospital in Chester in 2004, in collaboration with the late Gene Hughes, Dr David Ritchie, Kodak and Alliance Medical.

Mr Bobić is the UK’s first AOSSM-ESSKA Travelling Fellow (1991), which is one of the most coveted international fellowships in sports orthopaedics. He is one of the founding members of the ICRS (International Cartilage Repair Society, www.cartilage.org), a member of the ICRS General Board member and an active member of the ICRS Diagnostic Imaging Work Group.
