Vladimir Bobić is a Consultant Orthopaedic Knee Surgeon in full-time clinical and surgical practice. He is the Director and founder of Chester Knee Clinic and Cartilage Repair Centre. The clinic, founded in 1996, is based at the Grosvenor Hospital in Chester, where it is recognised as an ISAKOS-approved teaching centre.

Mr Bobić has over twenty six years of extensive experience in all aspects of knee surgery, including arthroscopic surgery, ligament reconstruction, knee arthroplasty, and particularly in articular cartilage repair. He is the founder of the Liverpool Knee Service and has previously held the post of full-time NHS knee surgeon at The Royal Liverpool and Broadgreen University Hospitals, Broadgreen Hospital, Liverpool (1996 to 2002).

Mr Bobić is an internationally recognised expert and one of the UK’s clinical pioneers in knee articular cartilage repair. He is the inventor and instrument designer of Arthrex OATS (Osteochondral Autograft Transfer System) articular cartilage repair technology. He performed the first ACI (Autologous Chondrocyte Implantation) in the North West of England in 1998, and today regularly performs a wide range of cartilage repair procedures in Chester, including ACI surgery. He was granted Liverpool LREC approval for a Randomised comparative evaluation of Genzyme Carticel ACI vs. Microfracture in the treatment of articular cartilage defects of the knee in October 1999, and South Cheshire LREC for multicentre clinical study of The effectiveness of ACI compared with MACI for the treatment of damaged articular cartilage of the knee (MREC approved Stanmore multicentre clinical trial) in May 2003. He was also a member of the MRC funded and MREC approved ACTIVE trial (multicentre trial of autologous chondrocyte implantation) based at The Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital in Oswestry. He is the principal investigator in an ongoing BioPoly clinical trial (Multi-centre, open label, prospective, consecutive series registry database of BioPoly RS Partial Resurfacing Knee Implant), approved by the NHS NRES Committee East of England – Cambridge Central on 14 September 2011, based at the Grosvenor Hospital Chester and three other hospitals in England.

He continues to focus on articular cartilage repair, which is his main clinical, imaging and research interest. His clinical and surgical practice includes all contemporary articular cartilage repair technologies like subchondral drilling (or microfracture), OATS (autologous osteochondral grafting, which is often combined with implantation of autologous bone marrow aspirate), AMIC (deep subchondral drilling combined with collagen ChondroGide membrane), ACI or CCI (autologous chondrocyte implantation or characterized chondrocyte implantation) and autologus stem cell-based therapies.

Mr Bobić has a decade of experience in using autologous bone marrow aspirate in combination with deep subchondral drilling and autologous osteochondral grafting (OATS) for the treatment of mild to moderate distal femoral osteoarthritis. He also organised the first regional seminar on the use of Autologous Stem Cell Therapies in Orthopaedics which was held in Chester in June 2013.

In 2014 he introduced proprietary in-house-processed autologous stem cell technology (derived from autologous fat tissue or autologous bone marrow aspirate), for the treatment of sports injuries and other knee conditions like patella and quadriceps tendinosis, ligament sprains and partial tears, meniscal and articular cartilage repair and articular cartilage damage and defects

Mr Bobić also specializes in medico-legal aspects of knee injuries.

He has over twenty years of experience in clinical and arthroscopic imaging, including digital image and video editing, and over sixteen years of experience in clinical and MR digital imaging of articular cartilage. Mr Bobić introduced web-based MRI teleradiology at the Grosvenor Nuffield Hospital in Chester in 2004, in collaboration with the late Gene Hughes, Dr David Ritchie, Kodak and Alliance Medical. He is a founder of the ICRS Articular Cartilage Imaging and Rehabilitation Committees and has previously served as a chairman.

A dedicated teacher and sought-after orthopaedic lecturer throughout the world, Mr Bobić has given over 300 lectures on knee surgery at major international and national conferences since 1996. He has published numerous articles on knee articular cartilage injury, repair and imaging. He is involved in international collaborative clinical and basic science research related to knee articular cartilage imaging, repair, rehabilitation and functional outcomes.

Mr Bobić has also been invited as a visiting scholar by leading educational institutions, often regarded as a significant accolade and recognition of the scholar's prominence in the field. In 1998, Mr Bobić was a Visiting Associate Professor at the Musculoskeletal Imaging Section, Stanford University School of Medicine, Radiology Department, Stanford, California, USA, and a Visiting Professor of Orthopaedic Sciences and Medical Practice at University of Chester, UK, from July 2012 to July 2017.

Mr Bobić is the UK’s first AOSSM-ESSKA Travelling Fellow (1991), which is one of the most coveted international fellowships in sports orthopaedics to date. He is one of the founding members of the ICRS, joining in 1997 (International Cartilage Repair Society, www.cartilage.org), a former member of the ICRS General Board and a founder of the ICRS Imaging Committee and Rehabilitation Work Group) and ICRS Fellow since 2006.
